Schedule a Call

San Antonio changed its local sales tax allocation on January 1, 2026, but the combined tax rate on taxable purchases remains 8.25%. Dental practices must also manage Bexar County equipment reporting, Texas franchise-related filings, and federal income and payroll taxes.

For a solo-doctor dental PLLC, that can mean reporting business equipment to the Bexar Appraisal District each April, completing required Texas Comptroller filings each May, and staying current with IRS and Texas Workforce Commission obligations. San Antonio itself does not impose an income or general business receipts tax on dental practices.

Dental Accounting Group (DAG) provides remote bookkeeping, integrated tax preparation and planning, and financial advisory services to San Antonio dentists. Our firm has focused exclusively on the dental industry since 1990.

Accounting Support Built Around the Business of Dentistry

Dental practices have financial needs that differ from many other businesses. Insurance reimbursements, production and collections, laboratory expenses, provider compensation, and equipment financing all influence profitability.

DAG helps dentists organize those numbers into useful financial reports. Instead of treating accounting as a once-a-year exercise, we help owners monitor performance and plan ahead throughout the year.

Whether you're operating an established practice in Stone Oak, preparing to open an office near Alamo Ranch, or considering an acquisition in greater San Antonio, specialized financial guidance can support your next move.

What's Local in San Antonio — and What Changed in 2026?

San Antonio imposes no general income or gross-receipts tax on dental practices, and there is no universal city or county business license to renew. Texas likewise does not require a general statewide business license, although professional licensing, building permits, zoning, and occupancy requirements may apply. The Texas Business Permits Office provides guidance on activity-specific requirements.

The combined sales tax rate for taxable purchases within San Antonio is 8.25%: 6.25% Texas state tax and 2% combined local tax. The local components include VIA Metropolitan Transit and the Advanced Transportation District (ATD). Effective January 1, 2026, the ATD portion increased from 0.25% to 0.375%, with a corresponding adjustment to the remaining local allocation. The combined rate stayed at 8.25%.

For a dental practice, this means taxable supplies and equipment purchases generally remain subject to the same combined rate, even though the allocation among local taxing entities changed. Actual taxability depends on the item, transaction, and delivery location. Consult the Texas Comptroller's sales tax guidance for current rules.

Bexar County Equipment Renditions

The Bexar Appraisal District (BCAD) appraises business personal property located in Bexar County. A dental practice's reportable assets may include operatory chairs, delivery units, CBCT and other imaging systems, sterilizers, computers, furniture, instruments, and supplies on hand January 1.

The standard rendition deadline is April 15. Under Texas Tax Code §22.23, a timely written request generally extends the deadline to May 15. A further 15-day extension may be granted for good cause.

Failure to file a required rendition generally results in a penalty equal to 10% of the taxes imposed on the property under Texas Tax Code §22.28. BCAD has a process for requesting relief in qualifying circumstances, but a waiver should not be assumed.

Sales and Use Tax on Dental Purchases

Professional dental services generally are not among Texas's enumerated taxable services, so routine patient treatment is not ordinarily subject to sales tax. Dental practices are nevertheless purchasers of taxable supplies, furniture, computers, and equipment.

When an out-of-state vendor does not collect the appropriate tax, the practice may need to self-assess Texas use tax. Credit may be available for qualifying sales or use taxes properly paid to another state.

Some dental devices and appliances may qualify for exemptions under Texas Tax Code §151.313. The exemption should be evaluated based on the specific item and transaction rather than assuming all dental equipment is exempt.

Texas Franchise Tax and Employer Reporting

For 2026 Texas franchise tax reports, the no-tax-due threshold is $2.65 million in annualized total revenue. Eligible entities at or below that threshold generally owe no franchise tax and do not file a No Tax Due Report.

However, a dental PLLC may still be required to file a Public Information Report, generally by May 15. Failing to submit required information can jeopardize the entity's good standing and lead to forfeiture proceedings.

Practices with employees may also owe state unemployment tax to the Texas Workforce Commission. The taxable wage base is $9,000 per employee, with quarterly reporting separate from federal payroll returns.

2026 business personal property exemption: Beginning with the 2026 tax year, qualifying income-producing tangible personal property may be eligible for a $125,000 exemption. This can materially reduce or eliminate property tax liability for a smaller practice. Owners should confirm BCAD's current filing, certification, and eligibility requirements rather than assume the exemption eliminates every reporting obligation.

Appraisal districts depend on location: The correct county appraisal district is determined by where business property is physically located on January 1. A practice in a surrounding community or county should confirm its reporting jurisdiction instead of assuming every San Antonio-area address belongs to BCAD.

Does San Antonio Tax Dental Practice Income?

No. San Antonio and Bexar County do not impose a general income or business gross-receipts tax on dental practice profits or collections. Texas also does not impose an individual state income tax. However, the practice remains subject to applicable federal income and employment taxes, Texas franchise-related obligations, and local property taxes on taxable business assets.

How Does the $125,000 Property Exemption Affect a Dental Office?

The exemption applies to qualifying income-producing tangible personal property beginning with the 2026 tax year. A practice whose eligible assets fall within the exemption may have no taxable business personal property value after the exemption, but it should still verify whether BCAD requires a rendition, certification, or other filing. Property values and exemption eligibility are separate questions from whether a form must be submitted.

Sole Proprietor or S Corporation for a San Antonio Dentist?

Because Texas has no individual state income tax, the choice between sole proprietor treatment and an S corporation election is primarily a federal tax planning decision. An S election may offer employment-tax advantages in some circumstances, but owners must consider reasonable compensation, payroll costs, administrative requirements, and the practice's actual profit.

A calendar-year S corporation generally files federal Form 1120-S by March 15, subject to applicable deadline adjustments and extensions. The federal election does not automatically eliminate Texas franchise tax registration or information-reporting obligations. A dentist should evaluate the decision using actual practice earnings rather than collections alone.

How a Dental CPA Helps Manage the Full Calendar

Coordinating the April rendition deadline, May franchise-related filings, federal returns, payroll reporting, and equipment purchases requires reliable accounting records. DAG's integrated bookkeeping and tax planning helps San Antonio dentists maintain those records while reviewing profitability, cash flow, owner compensation, and equipment decisions throughout the year.

San Antonio Dental Accounting Frequently Asked Questions

Did my supply costs change when San Antonio's tax rates shifted in 2026?

Not at the register. San Antonio's Advanced Transportation District (ATD) sales tax component increased from 0.25% to 0.375% effective January 1, 2026, but the combined rate on taxable purchases inside the city remained 8.25%: 6.25% state tax plus 2% local tax.

The change adjusted how local tax revenue is allocated rather than increasing the total combined rate paid on taxable supplies and equipment. Individual purchases may still qualify for exemptions. See the Texas Comptroller's sales tax guidance for current information.

Can the Bexar Appraisal District's 10% rendition penalty be waived?

Sometimes. BCAD provides a process for requesting relief from the 10% failure-to-render penalty, but eligibility depends on the circumstances and applicable rules. Relief is not automatic.

The standard deadline for a required rendition is April 15. A timely written request generally extends the deadline to May 15 under Texas law, and an additional extension may be available for good cause. Filing on time—or requesting an extension before the deadline—is preferable to seeking penalty relief afterward.

Confirm the current filing and waiver procedures with the Bexar Appraisal District.

My practice collects about $1.2 million. Do I owe Texas franchise tax?

Generally not, assuming the practice's annualized total revenue for franchise tax purposes is approximately $1.2 million. That amount is below the $2.65 million no-tax-due threshold for 2026 franchise tax reports. However, patient collections and annualized total revenue for franchise tax purposes are not always identical.

A dental PLLC may still need to file its Public Information Report by May 15 even when no franchise tax is due. Eligible entities below the threshold generally do not file a No Tax Due Report. Failure to submit a required information report can jeopardize the PLLC's right to do business.

Review the Texas Comptroller's franchise filing requirements for the applicable reporting year.

Does San Antonio or Bexar County charge a local business license fee?

There is no universal business license at the San Antonio city, Bexar County, or Texas state level. However, a dental practice may still need professional licenses, building permits, occupancy approvals, and other activity-specific authorizations.

For many established practices, recurring local financial compliance centers on business personal property reporting to the appraisal district and any resulting property tax bill, rather than a general business license renewal. The Texas Business Permits Office provides additional guidance.

What equipment must a San Antonio dental practice report to BCAD?

Reportable business personal property can include operatory chairs, delivery units, X-ray and CBCT imaging equipment, sterilizers, computers, furniture, instruments, and supplies owned or held for business use on January 1. Original cost and acquisition year may be relevant to the appraisal district's valuation process.

Leased equipment should be identified according to the district's reporting instructions. Beginning with the 2026 tax year, qualifying income-producing tangible personal property may benefit from the $125,000 exemption. Confirm whether a rendition or certification is required with BCAD.

Do San Antonio dentists owe use tax on equipment purchased out of state?

Possibly. Texas use tax generally applies to taxable property purchased outside Texas and brought into the state for use when the appropriate sales tax was not collected. This can include certain dental equipment, computers, furniture, and supplies.

Qualifying dental devices may be exempt under Texas Tax Code §151.313. Credit may also be available for qualifying taxes properly paid to another state. Review the specific transaction and the Comptroller's use tax guidance before determining what is owed.

Yes. Dental Accounting Group provides remote bookkeeping, integrated tax preparation and planning, and financial advisory services to dental practices throughout San Antonio and the surrounding region.

DAG is headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, and does not maintain a physical San Antonio office. Dentists can contact our team or call (425) 739-0300 to discuss their accounting and financial planning needs.
